If you had to choose between a cat and a dog, which would you pick?

This question has long been a topic of debate among cat lovers and dog lovers, and different people will likely have different answers. For me personally, if I had to choose between the two, I’d pick a cat. Let me share why I’d recommend getting a cat by highlighting the benefits of cat ownership.

✅ Cats are less hassle
Anyone who’s owned a dog knows that dogs need regular, daily walks. They’re also more energetic and clingy, requiring their owners to play with them—otherwise, their excess energy can lead to destructive behavior like chewing up furniture. Cats, on the other hand, are quiet and independent. You don’t need to spend time taking them outside every day; simply feeding them on schedule and cleaning their litter box is usually enough. For someone like me, who works during the day and has an irregular schedule in the evenings, cats are far less demanding than dogs.

✅ Cats come with fewer risks
In recent years, there have been occasional incidents of dogs attacking people, leading many major cities to implement restrictions on dog activities and ownership. When getting a dog, you might not even be able to choose your preferred breed, and there’s a lot of paperwork and procedures involved. Dogs can also be noisy, which is inconvenient if you live in a small apartment (common for office workers), as they might disturb neighbors and strain relationships.

✅ Cats are cleaner
Cat owners know that felines are naturally tidy. They use a designated spot for the bathroom and even bury their waste afterward. They also spend hours grooming themselves daily, licking their fur and wiping their faces with their paws. As a result, indoor cats usually stay quite clean.

Dogs, however, need daily walks, and their playful, energetic nature often leads them to get dirty outdoors. Compared to dogs, cats save their owners a lot of trouble when it comes to cleanliness.

✅ Cats are cheaper to keep
Owning a cat is generally much less expensive than owning a dog, especially when it comes to food. Most dogs have big appetites—many can finish a large bowl of kibble in one meal. Their owners often spend several hundred, even over a thousand, yuan on dog food each month, adding up to a significant expense over a year.

Cats, by contrast, eat very little, even when they’re “pigging out.” Nowadays, many people want a pet but prefer one with lower costs, making cats a popular choice.

These are my personal reasons for choosing a cat. Of course, both cats and dogs are wonderful, cute pets. Whether you choose a cat or a dog, it’s a great decision. Some people love cats for their quiet independence, while others adore dogs for their lively affection. Preferences differ, but what unites us is our love for our pets. Once you decide to bring one home, cherish every day with them!
