Did you know? Dogs 🐶 also have menstrual cycles, and even puppies will experience their first period during their young stage. I’ve compiled key facts and precautions about dogs’ menstrual cycles—dog parents with female pups, take note 👀!
🔴 Heat Cycle = Menstrual Period
When a dog gets her “period,” it means she’s in heat—and this is also the window when she’s fertile for breeding.
🔴 A Dog’s First Heat Cycle
Female dogs will have their first period between 6–12 months of age, typically around 8 months, though it varies by individual health. Smaller breeds often start earlier than medium or large breeds.
🔴 Female Dogs Go Into Heat Twice a Year
Generally, they cycle once in spring and once in autumn, but this can vary. More accurately, they go into heat twice a year, with 5–6 months between cycles.
🟢 Signs of a Female Dog’s Heat/Period
- Swelling of the vulva (🍑), with a light pink, clear discharge initially.
- Bloody discharge (🩸) from the vulva, and frequent self-grooming (licking the area).
- Restlessness or clinginess, increased whining, and reduced energy.
- Increased thirst and more frequent urination.
- Decreased appetite and lethargy.
🟢 Signs of a Male Dog in Heat (Triggered by Females)
- Excessive mounting behavior (on objects, other dogs, or even humans).
- Restlessness, with a strong urge to roam near females in heat.
- Marking territory by urinating in multiple spots around the house or outdoors.
- Heightened aggression toward other male dogs.
(Male dogs don’t have a fixed heat cycle—they respond to pheromones released by females in heat, which triggers their mating instincts.)
🔴 Precautions for Female Dogs During Their Period
- Use doggy sanitary pants to prevent excessive licking, which can cause infections.
- Keep the area clean—gently wipe with warm water daily to reduce irritation.
- Ensure she stays warm, as her body may be more sensitive to cold during this time.
- Protect her from male dogs! Avoid group walks and limit social interactions with unneutered males.
✅ Do not bathe your dog during her period unless absolutely necessary. Also, avoid spaying during this time—her immune system is weaker. The best time for spaying is about one week after the heat cycle ends.
✅ For breeding, the optimal window is around day 11 of the heat cycle, when the bloody discharge stops. Never breed a dog during her first heat—she’s still physically immature!
Avoid vaccinations or deworming during your dog’s period, as her body is already under slight stress.
Extended Notes:
- Sanitary Pants Tips: Choose breathable, well-fitting options to avoid chafing. Change them regularly to keep her comfortable.
- Behavioral Care: Some dogs may feel anxious during heat—offer extra cuddles, keep her routine consistent, and provide safe chew toys to ease restlessness.
- Spaying Benefits: If you don’t plan to breed, spaying (after her first heat) reduces the risk of uterine infections and breast tumors later in life.
Understanding your female dog’s cycle helps you care for her better, ensuring she stays healthy and comfortable during this natural phase! 🐾
