Summer is here! For all pet parents with dogs at home, these tips to help your dog stay healthy through the summer are a must-know đ
- Daily Behavior Tips
đ Avoid walking during extreme heat
Dogs have few sweat glands and are very heat-sensitive! Never walk them at noonâchoose 6â7 AM or after 8 PM instead. The ground wonât burn their paws, and it reduces the risk of heatstroke, making walks more enjoyable for your pup!
đ Donât bathe too frequently
Itâs understandable to want to cool your dog down in summer, but frequent baths damage their skin barrier! Once every 1â2 weeks is enough in summer. After bathing, donât let them sunbathe to dryâthis can cause heatstroke!
đ Donât let dogs sleep directly on the floor
Cold floors can lead to abdominal colds and diarrhea! Put an air-conditioned coat on them or lay down a soft mat to block cold air, letting them sleep comfortably while protecting their stomach. - Diet, Grooming & Pest Control
đ„Š Adjusting diet is key
Feed low-fat foods, fruits, and vegetables in summerâavoid greasy meals! Food spoils easily, so replace food and water promptly, and stick to regular feeding times. Donât overfeed or underfeed to prevent diarrhea.
â Never shave a dogâs fur completely
Shaving all fur increases the risk of skin infections and sunburn! For long-haired dogs, leave 2cm of fur; short-haired dogs donât need shavingâjust trim lightly to protect their skin.
đ Stick to a pest control schedule
Summer brings more parasites in grassy areas, and dogs can easily pick up fleas while playing! Deworm internally once every 3 months and externally once a month. Regular deworming keeps parasites away. - Cooling Hacks
đ Watermelon for hydration and cooling
If your dog likes it, offer a piece of watermelon (like fresh chilled fruit) to replenish water and dissipate heat. Just avoid overdoing it to prevent stomach colds.
đ§ Provide plenty of room-temperature water
Dogs lose more fluids in summer and can dehydrate easily! Bring water on walksânever give ice water or ice cream, as they irritate the stomach. Stick to room-temperature water for a healthy summer.
đš Keep the environment well-ventilated
Ensure rooms are airy. When not using air conditioning, let your dog stay in a dry areaânever lock them on a balcony, as extreme heat can cause dangerous heatstroke! A cool, breathable space keeps them comfortable.
Dog owners, save these tips! Let your furry friend have a healthy, happy summerïœ
